Children’s Insurance – Healthy Families in California
California Health Plan
California is one of the leaders in providing health care for children who are not covered by other insurance plans. Healthy Families will provide health and dental insurance for children that will cover most of the cost for visits to the doctor or the dentist. The California health plan has contracts with clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, and laboratories to provide the care your child needs. This California health plan covers those children who do not have insurance coverage and for those who do not qualify for state aid insurance.
Children who qualify are those under 19 years old and without employer sponsored health insurance. The children must live in the state of California and are not qualified for Medi-Cal. Children must meet immigration and citizenship rules and live in families that fit the income guidelines set by Healthy Families in California. Parents, legal guardians, foster parents, stepparents, or caretaker relatives may apply for children’s insurance if that child lives in their home. Income for parents only is considered when eligibility needs are looked at.
The California health plan for healthy families may cover you if you are a minor not living with parents or legal guardians or other caretakers. If you are a minor and have minor children of your own, you may qualify for Healthy Family insurance.
Healthy Families of California offers low-cost health, dental, and vision care. Each county has a separate California health plan, and each county is different. This insurance plan will not deny coverage of a child based on any health conditions he or she may have. If your child has certain physical limits or chronic medical, dental, or vision problems, they may be referred to specialists approved by California Children’s Services. They may also stay enrolled in the Healthy Families plan for other health care not related to their specific condition.
Mental health coverage is covered for most children involved in the Healthy Families California health plan. Children can receive mental health help through basic health plans but also may qualify for specialized mental health services. If the child is determined to have a serious emotional disturbance, they will be referred to a specialist but remain covered in the Healthy Families plan for all other medical conditions.
Pregnancy related services are covered by Healthy Families but pregnant family members may qualify for no-cost Medi-Cal coverage. A new baby will be covered for the first year by Medi-Cal.If your children have been without health insurance for more than three months, they are eligible to apply for this California health plan.
