Do You Really Need Disability Insurance?
CA Health Insurance

What is disability insurance and do you really need it? If you are a business in the state of California, you need to carry disability insurance. It is funded through employee payroll deductions of California employees and provides short-term benefits that are unable to work because of a nonwork-related injury. California is only one of a handful of states that offer benefits to workers who are out of work because of an illness or injury received away from work.

CA Health Insurance has a plan called SDI (state disability insurance) program that covers about 12 million workers. Most of the time this CA Health insurance is mandatory, however, some employees are not mandated for this coverage such as railroad employees, some non-profit agency employees and most government employees.

There are some wonderful benefits to State Disability Insurance. This coverage goes with the employee and is not dependent on staying on the same job. It is mandatory for most workers in the state and the coverage cannot be canceled or denied because of health risks. Coverage with this CA Health insurance cannot be denied even if the employee works in a job rated as dangerous or has a preexisting medical condition.

This California health plan is funded by employee payroll deductions are based on the same rate. SDI of California will pay up to 52 weeks of benefits and has a waiting period of seven days.

The CA Health insurance, according to the SDI plan, has three disability insurance plans; one of them should fit your needs. This is the state plan that covers most of the state’s employees. There is also a voluntary plan that is private. It can be used as a substitute for the state plan and is only available if the employer and most of the employees agree to have this coverage. Your employer should provide information on a voluntary disability plan to you.

A third alternative to disability insurance is elective coverage with a CA Health Insurance plan. Self-employed workers, business partners, and employers may choose this plan. The cost for joining in is set as an annual rate and is not the same as for employers who take part in the state plan.

Disability insurance may seem to be something you will never need to worry about. It can be an important part of your family’s financial survival if you become sick or injured from a nonwork-related accident. Many have discovered too late how important a disability insurance policy may be to protect their income. Receiving part of your wages from CA Health Insurance may mean the difference between sound financial health and bankruptcy. If you are an employee in the state of California, check with employer regarding what type of disability insurance coverage they provide.
