5 Key Considerations When Considering Health Plans
California Health Plan
There are key factors when choosing a California health plan. Before making a final decision on your group health care provider you must look at all the issues and information that is available to you. There are five key considerations when comparing group health care plans.
- Doctors and specialists are your first consideration. Some California health plans ask you to use only doctors or specialists that are enrolled in their network. If you are choosing a new health plan, check to be sure your doctor is included on this list. If your personal doctor is not included, you should research credentials of any future health care provider. You can check credentials with the American Medical Association or calling the office and asking for their credentials. Consider where they are found and how available they will be to you and your family. If the doctor is near, check out the hours they are available as well. Find out if they have an agreement with another doctor to cover for one another in case of an emergency.
- Before you make a decision on any California health plan, find out what their policy is on preexisting conditions. You may assume that any condition you already have will be covered but this is not usually the case. Preexisting conditions may be excluded from coverage for a specific time or they can be fully covered. This will vary from plan to plan. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act makes sure you have coverage for a preexisting condition if your employer is changing health care plans and you were covered by the old plan for the previous twelve months.
- California health plans may be different when it comes to emergency room and hospital care. You will need to know what they consider an “emergency.” Some health plans ask you call in for preapproval before a hospital admission even if it is considered an emergency. If you have a health plan like this and do not get approval for admission, you may find yourself saddled with the bill for your stay. Some health plans also want you to contact your primary doctor before receiving any emergency care from a hospital. These are important considerations to look at and may make a difference when you make your choice of California health plans.
- Cost of your health plan is an important consideration to look at before choosing which plan is best for your family. You need to check the amounts of deductibles, what the co pay will be, and what percent of your health care will you are responsible for after the deductible has been met. You also will want to know what limits are placed on your policy and if they are yearly or lifetime limits.
A final consideration is to check if the health plans cover regular physicals and health screenings. This is especially important for families with school-age children and people with significant risks of health problems. Also check for prescription drug coverage especially if you or a family member must take medication regularly. California health plans may differ on whether they will pay for generic or brand name form.
